Hooked on Hospice Booklet Series

Coming off the press this month are the first two in a series of booklets titled Hooked on Hospice. Heartfelt and informative, the booklets are written by our founder Karla Wheeler, whose hospice experience spans 20 years. Five members of Karla's immediate family have been blessed with a "good death," thanks to hospice -- her grandmother in 1987, father and father-in-law in 1998, mother in 2004, and most recently her husband in late 2006.

In this heartfelt publication, Karla tells the extraordinary story of her husband Gerry's last day on earth and how hospice helped ease the way for Gerry, Karla, their 14-year-old daughter Jenny, and everyone who knew and loved Gerry. As tragic as it was to know that her partner of 30 years was dying at the age of 54, Karla's incredible personal account underscores that hospice is available for any family. This is true regardless of circumstances, Karla learned, even when a patient's decline is so rapid and unexpected -- like in Gerry's case -- and they are placed on life support in the Intensive Care Unit. This is a "must-read" publication for anyone furthering the mission of hospice care.

Karla's second booklet is titled Hooked on Hospice: Love is All that Matters. As a longtime hospice volunteer, Karla has visited with hundreds of patients, sharing in what she calls "the most sacred time in a family's life." What these families have taught Karla is that "love is all that matters." Told from the heart, this publication will inspire potential volunteers and renew the spirit and passion of anyone working in hospice and palliative care.
